The various floating wetlands offered by Pflanzeninsel Niederrhein
In order to find the right size of floating wetlands for you, it is important to determine the meaning and purpose. When it comes to the visual use, i.e. to beautify your pond, your floating wetlands should have some freedom of movement after installation. The moving, rotating and floating wetlands are a real eye-catcher and have something calming.
If you aim to improve the water quality with the floating wetlands, the pond surface should be covered by between 10 - 30%, depending on the application and nutrient load. In special cases, an overlap of 50% may be required.
If you need advice on the size of the floating wetlands, do not hesitate to write to us. Of course, the floating wetlands can also be combined and it is possible to combine individual floating wetlands into larger groups. And if you want a completely different shape or size, write to us, we would be happy if you give us the chance to further develop our floating wetlands according to your wishes.
Material of the floating wetlands from Pflanzeninsel Niederrhein
Unlike the usual plastic mats, the pumice material, the buoyant body is purely mineral and largely weatherproof, i.e. neither sensitive to frost nor to the UV light of solar radiation. This ensures a long durability and the material is in no way environmentally harmful.
The rough and large surface of the Floating Device serves as a settlement opportunity for the useful biofilm, which is required for nutrient reduction.
The buoyancy of the floating wetlands, can be adjusted individually for your application at customer's request. This is necessary, for example, when providing nesting sites for black terns. Feel free to contact us regarding your application, we will be happy to advise you.
The outer shell of the floating wetlands can consist of two different variants:
Wire frame
100% plastic-free made of stainless steel. Dimensionally stable in square or triangular shape.
Net
Flexible net structure made of UV-stable HDPE. Round and oval shapes are possible
Planting and fixing of the floating wetlands
The pond wetlands from Pflanzeninsel Niederrhein are sold unplanted. Of course, you can also buy appropriate pond plants or repositioning plants from us, which in our experience have not only proven to be beautiful, but also to be particularly useful. The pond plants can be purchased from us as a set or as individual plants. We can also advise you on this.
For planting, an opening is made in the grid or net at the appropriate point using tongs or scissors. The root ball is inserted through this opening between the pumice stones and is held here (see planting instructions below). The roots get direct access to water and thus to nutrients. After a short time, a pronounced root area develops below the floating wetlands. The particularly important biofilm for cleaning the pond forms on the roots. Pond dwellers find shelter and a place to spawn between the roots.
The floating wetlands can be placed on the water so that they can move freely or be stationary with an anchor. By using an anchor, the position or range of motion can be precisely determined. If possible, we recommend letting the floating wetlands float freely for optical reasons, the movement on the water using wind and currents is very calming and (in our experience) looks particularly beautiful.

What are floating wetlands made of?
The Floating Device of our floating wetlands is made from 100% purely mineral plastic-free material. This is largely UV and frost resistant. The structure resembles that of a pumice stone and offers a large surface area for the settlement of a biofilm. A lattice structure made of stainless steel is used to surround the Floating Device. In this variant, the floating wetland is 100% plastic-free. Another option is to enclose it with a flexible plastic net made of food-safe, UV-resistant HDPE. Both variants are available from Pflanzeninsel-Niederrhein.de

Why should I use floating wetlands in my pond?
Floating wetlands reduce algae growth, offer protection for fish and small creatures, they improve the water quality, can serve as nesting wetlands for black terns, for example, and simply look beautiful.
-
How do floating wetlands improve water quality?
The roots of the plants on the floating wetlands reduce the nutrient content of the pond and increase biodiversity.
-
How long do floating wetlands last?
The durability of floating wetlands is highly dependent on the base materials (Floating Device and edging). If these are not resistant to UV light (sunlight) and frost-proof, you as a customer will not have long lasting joy with the floating wetland. Therefore, the floating wetlands of Pflanzeninsel Niederrhein consist of largely UV and frost-resistant material. This is 100% mineral and therefore offers a particularly long durability.
-
Which floating wetlands manufacturer has plastic-free floating wetlands?
Pflanzeninsel-Niederrhein.de offers 100% plastic-free and durable floating wetlands.
-
How do I attach floating wetlands to my pond?
Floating wetlands do not necessarily have to be attached. It looks nice when they move freely on the water. Of course there is the possibility to attach the floating wetlands with anchors if the radius of movement is to be restricted, e.g. in large ponds and bodies of water.
-
How many plants should be planted per floating wetland?
The number of plants depends on the plant species and the size of the floating wetland. Roughly 10 - 20 plants per m² can be accommodated.
-
What do I have to consider when planting floating wetlands?
Depending on the variant of the floating wetland from Pflanzeninsel-Niederrhein, some space is created between the pumice-like stones in the net variant. With the stainless steel version, the places for the plants are already given, but some space should also be created there. After that, you should break up the moistened root balls of the plants and plant them in the given/favored spot on the floating wetland.
-
When should you shade the pond with floating wetlands?
The pond should be shaded to protect the fish from UV radiation and to reduce algae. Problems with algae are caused by an excessive nutrient load in combination with an excessively high water temperature. The nutrient load and the water temperature are reduced by floating wetlands and thus the growth of algae.
-
Which plants are suitable for floating wetlands?
In particular, reduction plants such as dwarf rushes, sedges, swamp marigolds, water mint, swamp forget-me-not, mimolus, buttercups or pennywort are ideal for renaturing their surroundings and creating an ecological balance. They all remove nutrients from the pond that could otherwise become the food base for algae. Rush plants and sedges in particular are regarded as natural preventatives of a nutrient surplus, as they produce citric acid in order to absorb phosphate from the pond.
-
Where should floating wetlands be fixed in the pond?
Floating wetlands do not necessarily have to be fixed, they look very nice when they move freely in the water. However, if it is desired or necessary to anchor the floating wetlands in the pond, this can be done with an anchor on the bottom of the pond. The anchor can be realized by a stone or a sack filled with stones.
-

-
What type of pond plants should be planted on floating wetlands?
In particular, reduction plants such as dwarf rush, sedge, marsh marigold, water mint, marsh forget-me-not, mimolus, buttercup or pennywort are ideal for renaturing their environment and restoring an ecological balance. They all remove nutrients from the pond that could otherwise become the food base for algae. Rush plants and sedges in particular are regarded as natural preventatives of a nutrient surplus, as they produce citric acid in order to absorb phosphate from the pond.
-
Why aren't the plants growing on my floating wetland?
Both, the arrangement of the individual plants and the position of the floating wetland in the pond can influence growth. In particular, the influence of sun and shade is essential for the development of plants. Most pond or reposition plants prefer a sunny or semi-shady place.
In most cases, the nutrient supply is more than sufficient and is only in the rarest of cases the reason for poor plant growth.
-
Where do floating wetlands float?
Floating wetlands are moved on the surface of the pond or body of water by the water current and wind.
